What to Know About Bordeaux

The Bordeaux wine region is located in the southwestern portion of France. The vineyards are located primarily along the Gironde River. There are 54 appellations in Bordeaux. These areas are designated by the government. Vineyards are described as being  located on the left or right bank. Graves, Haut-Medoc, Margaux, Paulilac, Saint -Estèphe are on the left bank and Pomerol, Saint Emillion, and Saint Georges are located on the right bank.

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Carménère. On the left bank the wines of top-quality Chateaux blends are 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc & 15% Merlot. Wines of the right bank are blends generally based on Merlot.

The regions mentioned produce some the finest and most expensive wine of this region.
